Whether we are aware of it or not, most of us take refuge in statistics. To turn and face the truth of our cowardice, weakness, and helplessness is to acknowledge our self-contempt. We prefer the odds that we will never being tested by a difficult fate and that we will never have our shortcomings exposed in public. We thereby maintain the illusion that we are more worthy than we secretly believe.
